Allright! Now I was excited to see this and it was tough waiting. See unless its something big I wait for ticket sales on a movie or its place on top 10 ticket sales to reach certain points before I go to see a movie, then I go on a weekday night at the like 11:30 showing because I cant fucking stand loud mouthed kids or adults for that matter in movies. I dont pay 9 bucks to listen to them fucking talk god damnit! Its rude, its inconsiderate and its really fucking annoying! And yes you may think your being quiet, but I can still fucking hear you! And turn off your god damn cell phone! Yeah you hold it down to text during the whole movie but every person behind you see's that fucking light, even all the way in the back!
Anyway, as I was saying I finally got to see zombieland. Its director Ruben Fleischer who up till now hasnt done anything aside from The Girls Guitar Club and pointed a camera on Jimmy Kimmel Live, so yeah. It stars Woody Harrelson and some other folks also. I was peppy and excited for this as it looked like it was going to be a really fun movie to see with humor and zombies. And anyone who knows me I love me some zombies, I always have since I saw Return of the Living Dead as a youngster. Was it fun? Did I laugh? Was I atleast entertained? All answers will be revealed, all questions will be addressed!
Direction: The whole movie from a directorial standpoint was rather slap-dash and pretty much what I expected which was nothing special. It wasnt terrible by any means but a beetle could have been directing this and no one would have noticed. It wasnt awful like some made for sci-fi (I refuse to use their new name which is pretentiously stupid) channel, but then again it didnt have a personality all its own like say The Shining. It felt like the director just shot the movie strictly from script ideas and storyboards. As if he understood how to use a camera, lighting, posistioning and all that jazz but only from like a first year film student points of view where he only knew from a textbook. Also stopping to make an obvious gag in the movie so they could put bolded letters on the screen displaying "one of the survival rules" was done about twice as many times as it took to start being annoying.
Acting: Well when you have a movie title "Zombieland" your obviously going to get a certain grade of acting quality and when your best actor in the film is Woody Harrelson then obviously your bar is only going to go so high. I only have a resounding "Meh" when I try to verbalize my feelings on the acting in this. I never could get into any of the characters either, even Woody's which was perfect for him felt like he was being forced to play the part and not like he really wanted to. My biggest gripe was the other major character in the film, Columbous. I think they were originally like "We need a hip character for the kids like the one from Superbad and Juno. But we cant afford that kid so we will find another one like him and tell him to act exactly like him and sound exactly like him" and thats what they did basically. So basically no one in here could act their way out of a nutsack and even the unexpected big name star showing up made me roll my eyes in disinterest and I couldnt wait for their part to be over so we could get the show on the road.
Storyline: Not much to say here. When you go to see something called "Zombieland" your not exactly there to get your story on. Really this is one of those 3 in the morning decisions on the story. Basically the movies title tells you the entire story right there. It all feels very undeveloped, cheap and just a quick excuse to try and do a zombie comedy and nothing else. Granted I wasnt expecting to be seeing the cinema equivilant of The Divine Comedy here but some effort put into the story would have been interesting. It was like the story was a loaf of bread with both end cut off and all you have is the good part in the middle but you feel somewhat bewildered because you didnt get to see the start or the end. And thats how I felt, like they just took some random people from the zombie apocalypse and filmed it for 90 minutes and then got back in the van and left.
Effects: The effects were boring and tedious. The sound effects and music had no personality or charm, just random stuff pulled from stock libraries. It all just sounded very generic and uninteresting to me with no attention to detail. Visually I wasnt to impressed, there really wasnt much CG effects in the movie (which is always a bonus for me) but when they were there, they were pretty obvious and not very well done as they made the movie feel very artificial and thus not interesting as it detracted from the experince. I mean visually the movie wasnt awful but it was very ho-humly approached in every aspect, there was no care put into the movie visually speaking.
Overall: I was quite let down in virtually every department. Was it bad? No it wasnt bad but it certainly wasnt good either. This is one of those movies you rent and watch one time and then never really pay attention to it again after that, maybe you watch it once when your bored on a movie channel when it hits cable in a year, at best. Its just a dissapointment because the trailers make this look like it would be alot of fun to go see and fill that little black in my void in my soul that lusts for a good zombie flick. I can not reccomend this as a movie going experince though, it isnt worth the 9 dollar admission, I can not even imagine any dvd version will be worth buying.
I give it 4 out of 10 stars.
