Well here we are again with another game review.
Ill start with this statement, This game is so fucking buggy I want to throw my controller into the tv.
Lets reflect back on my Fallout 3 experince for a sec. I pre-ordered the collectors edition on my pc last year because I wanted the lunchbox and figure and I was excited to get this thing home and install it. What I found was a broken fucking game I couldnt play for 3 hours without multiple lock ups and corruption of my saves. Out of anger I uninstalled it and put it away, it took 5 months before bethesda patched the game to a playable state. 5 months I couldnt play my 70 dollar game. Once it was patched I was over joyed to play the game and was really into it.
After some time I noticed it was just Oblivion reskinned though and using the same engine. Rocks looked the same upon close inspection, npc's had the same stiff animations, lock picking was basically the same, items broke, vast expansive areas that looked all the same and so on. It even would lock up every 5 minutes if I had x-fire on the in the background like Oblivion did. But despite its faults I did enjoy the game itself. It had some interesting characters, I could listen to Malcom Mcdowell narrate the same lines over and over again for hours, the quests were interesting, despite my disbelief VATS never got old and it was just good fun.
Out of spite for Bethesda's poor patching, customer service and the fact they were pimping DLC before the game even came out I never got any of the 5 DLC packs for it. So I grabbed recently the Game of the Year Edition off ebay used and was thrust back into the Capital Wasteland with all 5 DLC included in it.
Mothership Zeta is repetitive and really boring, by the time I finished I was just rushing to get it over with.
Operation Anchorage wasnt to bad and told some backstory to the game, I really wish they had taken more advantage of this though but all in all it wasnt bad and had a nice change of scenery. Buggy as fuck later on and has a game breaking bug in it I ran across.
Point Lookout has a kind of horror vibe to it and is very interesting. To bad slow downs ruined the flow. But this is my favorite of the 5 DLC.
The Pitt wasnt to bad. I was little bored with it since it felt so removed from the rest of the game and was very short as I beat it in one sitting. It felt more like a after thought and had no real depth at all. Was also buggy with alot of slowdowns and couple lock ups.
Broken steel. This mother wont let me finish it by locking up with slowdown everytime I get close to my destination, from what I can tell its not that interesting and feels like they are just trying to drag out the games core story longer than they should have with just some filler.
Well the main game was fairly playable with some slow downs and 60 second lock ups here and there, I was annoyed but not to annoyed. But soon as I hit my first DLC, Operation Anchorage I was greeted with constant slow downs, dozens of system lock up and one bug where I was lucky I for some reason backed up my save just before the end because the very last guy was bugged and wouldnt move to start conversation where I was locked into place. Had I not backed up my save the game would have been over right there because I was perpetually stuck in a spot upon loading, faced with a NPC that wouldnt do anything and would have had to start allover. Everyother expansion also suffers multiple lock up and freezes with constant 90 second moments of the game literally going to 1 frame per 10 seconds. I have given up on the last one Broken Steele as everytime I approach my destination the frame rate drops to fucking negative 100 and eventually locks up, has done this 4 times to me and each time I have to start allover again and cant save mid way because there is constantly an enemy nearby. Its not just me either, I see dozens of people everyday on the fallout 3 forums with the same problems.
In the end this is a fun game but because Bethesda doesnt fucking test anything, has worse customer service than Burger King, has no idea how to code a fucking game engine properly or listen to their customer base and fix problems this game is a steaming turd on the sidewalk of gaming's highway. Last time I saw a game this full of problems was Ultima 9. The real problem is none of these not unknown problems people have been complaining about for along time. Of course everytime Bethesda makes a game its full of bugs and unplayable, then they fix it just enough to be playable and then pretend like nothing is wrong at all. I guess their philosphy is "Unless our game is completely broken we dont care, but if its totally broken we will fix the problem soon as were done tossing eachother off over the awards we got for our poorly tested, badly coded game."
I would say more about the game but given this is just a compilation of a game released last year and its 5 expansions Im sure you already have a firm grasp of what the game is and whether or not you like it.
Bottom line is if you want this game bad enough then buy it used cheap or wait and get it off ebay next year after christmas when everyone unloads it. But I can not in good faith reccomend this game at 60 dollars, its 30 or less at best. Save your money on this and buy something else instead.
I bet the next game Bethesda puts out will just say on the screen "fuck you" and then immediately crash the system when you push start.
Id give it 8 out of 10 stars if it fucking worked but since it doesnt Im giving it a 2 out of 10.
Stay tuned for alot more game reviews coming soon. I broke my fucking wallet recently with the landslide of games coming out so I should be set for quite sometime. Now comes the chore of chosing which to play next. Uncharted 2, brutal legend, demons souls, infamous, ratchet and clank a crack in time, cryostasis and on the 17th Ill be picking up god of war collection and left 4 dead 2. And fuck me I still want persona on psp.
