I know Im a little behind for reviewing this but being me I cant afford to buy all the new games coming out at 60 bucks a pop and then blow through them. So most new games I have to wait till it reaches my affordability of "I got it off ebay for less than 30 bucks after shipping".
I was hesistant about getting Ghostbusters at full price because while I love the Ghostbusters movie I was having a hard time seeing a 25 year old movie turned into a modern video game because the problem is thus, when you revive old stuff like this 20 or more years later its being made by people who are fanboys of it and thus indulging their own nerdoff fantasies before thinking what impact it will have. Yes yes I know the original people were back to voice, advise and write the game but again, its been along time and whatever they had that worked back then wont always work again because they have changed and times have changed. Just because something is a classic doesnt mean it needs to be revived.
At any rate the game is pretty good but not great. The voice acting was great as well as the characters portrayls, except Venkman because he was wayyyyy to hammy in this to the point of being annoying and over the top for his character while everyone else pretty much stayed the same.
I got excited hearing the music and sound effects, hearing the voices, it was like a flashback to better days. I laughed out loud a few times at some jokes made, the sound of the proton pack heating up made me smile and seeing the Ecto-1 wheeling around was a treat. I was dissapointed you dont play as the Ghostbusters, but instead a recruit. It fits the story well enough and works in this, its not the best but it never annoyed me.
My complaints.
1-The story itself was so self indulgent that it was fairly uninteresting and boring, I also didnt like that the entire story was just a excuse to re-tread all the old ground from the first movie. Even large portions of the game were the exact same ghosts, in the exact same areas from the first movie, it was all very "Been there done that". Its just felt cheap, rushed and small.
2-Busting ghosts was a pain in the ass to because all the ghosts have annoyingly large health meters that take forever to drain them down far enough you could grab them with a capture stream, them smack them around a couple times then wrangle them into a trap, fighting them as they try to get away which took way to much time to get them into. Then you had the problem of moving them over a trap you drop, while your partners try to wrangle them over a trap they dropped and you have to do this for each ghost. Yeah you get 4 different weapons but I dont want to shoot green snot or yellow bullets, I only used the other 3 when a puzzle required me to the rest of the time I wanted the proton pack because this is the Ghostbusters god damnit.
3- Its basically a flip of the coin whether youll survive an encounter with ghosts or not because you constantly get blind sided because the control sucks and the ghosts fly around so fast allover the place and with your ass taking up 1/5th of the screen while you shoot brightly colored partical streams about you can only see about 1/2 of whats going on, then you have your team mates throwing streams allover the place, shit is breaking, monsters are darting all around and you constantly get cheaply hit because you cant tell whats going on. Well its unfair to say your always getting sucker punched, because when your not your team mates are and they lay helplessly crying for help till you go over and pick them up at which point one or both will be knocked right back down, so youll be starting over......alot. I was so fucking sick of hearing Peter saying "ow.....owwwwwww" over and over and over and over again that I wished he would die so I didnt have to hear him for the rest of the game. Oh and dont cross the streams, course with so much shit going on that youd swear your standing in a fireworks factory during a nuclear blast its hard to tell if your crossing a stream or not.
I really want to say this game is great but its just Ghostbusters 30 something fans jerking off and calling it a game. Its not horrible and I had fun with it but I dont have a big desire to play it again. Its a good game if your a real fan of the original Ghostbusters movie and thats the only people this game will appeal to is the fans, if you havent seen the Ghostbusters or dont like it then your probablly not going to like this, but if you want it then I would say its not worth more than 25 bucks.
I give it 5 out of 10 stars.
