My 2 cents game review: Batman Arkham Asylum

I wasnt sure about Batman when I first heard about it, then again in this day and age of developer bullshitting hype meters going so far off the scale at the slightest mention of a game that you would expect every single game to be released is going to descend from heaven in a gold chariot to bring upon us mere mortals a eternity of blissfull exsistence. So to me when it comes to games and movies on the whole its easier for me to assume everything is shit till it proves itself otherwise, that way on the rare occasion it isnt shit then I am very surprised and pleased at finding my diamond in the proverbial rough.

I really loved how they kept it dark but didnt use the color pallete of gun metal grey and dirt like 95% of the games out now do. It was dark but still colorfull. I liked the very simple combat mechanics, the storyline, the characters, voice acting, the setting and the pacing. It was a very polished game that you could tell was made by people who really wanted to make a good game. I was paticullary pleasured by how much it felt like you were Batman, I felt like I was actually a highly trained hand to hand combat fighting machine going up against 5 guys, or I felt like I was this thing of the dark instilling fear in my enemies when I skulked around or hung upside down waiting to snatch up a unsuspecting victim.

My only complaints were as follows.

1- The final boss fight sucked. It was stripped down, basic, dumbed down and unsatisfying. It had no flair that anyother boss fight had, it was just very flat and seemed like they said "Ok we ship the game in 3 days we need to just throw together the last fight in the next 3 hours".

2- The ending fucking sucked. After winning the final boss fight I was awarded with like 32 seconds of a boring, cliche and generic ending that felt very stale and uninspired. The point of a ending to any game or story is to satisfy the people for sticking with you till the end, good or bad endings its about leaving the person happy and wanting more. This felt like the person in charge of the ending overspent his lunch at a bar drinking and was late getting back to work to do the ending and just scribbled something on a cocktail napkin.

3- It was to easy and short. But first I will say maybe shorter was a good thing as it allowed the story to be constantly going forward without adding in a bunch of stupid side mission time wasters there just for the sake of increasing gameplay time. I got the game friday and beat it sunday, I didnt even like stay up all night or anything. I played it on normal, beat the game, unlocked 67% of the trophies, found all 240 of the ingame riddler clues, read all the hidden bios, and listened to all the voice recordings in a weekend. I mean I still have challenge maps to go through including my ps3 exclusive joker map but Im not in a big rush for that. I just wish it had like one more small to medium sized area to explore and one more boss fight just to maximize the games potential. But then again its a fine line between to much and not enough, all in all though I was pleased with the content.

4- I wished it played more on his detective aspect because thats whats really one of Batmans cooler aspect is that he has this brilliant mind and is afterall called the worlds greatest detective. As Batman in the game I never felt I got to solve anything or figure anything out myself, the game sort of held my hand and led me around when it came to solving things (aside from the riddler hidden trophies that is). His crime busting brain skills were displayed well but depended little to much on his gadgetry instead of his cranial capacity. Maybe next time they will be able to wedge in some more cerebral workouts for batsy.

All in all its a fine example of how you make a solid game and it really is the best Batman game ever made and really one of the best comic book games I ever played.

Id give it a 8 out 10 stars.
