My 2 cents movie review: Orphan

As always, I dont post spoilers in my movie reviews.

Well good evening folks, or whatever time of day you find yourself reading this in. Despite my brains last bit of good sense in a stiffling onslaught of self preservation it told me "Dont fucking see this awful film, its just a cross between the Good Son and The Omen remake only with a girl", but I said back "Dont you tell me what to do and stop saying Id like balls gently bumping my chin when Im trying to go to sleep". Anyway! Here we have the 3rd entry from director Jaume Serra, his previous films having been The House of Wax remake and.........Goal 2: The Living Dream.......yeah were already off to a great fucking start here, its like hiring someone and their resume references are "My little kitten I named titty, toothless joe from the alley behind knobbers strip club and the inventor of dvd case security stickers".

Direction: Honestly, it was pretty rock solid. I found no real flaws in the directing of the movie aside from few minor things I felt could have been shot a little better but all in all it was quite good. It had some nice angles and usage of the camera, the lighting was also nice and it had a couple of unique perspectives. It also seemed like the director was encouraging his actors also as even the smallest of things such a certain one word in the movie that was meant as a joke between 2 characters worked quite well, it was just something youd have to shoot probablly 20 times to get it just right since it all depended on the delivery and immediate reaction by the other person, it was so slight though it really wouldnt have mattered.

Acting: Well, its a horror film so expecting high grade acting is a stretch in most cases. However in this movie the acting was again pretty solid, no one really felt cheap or forced or like they were just waiting for it to end so they could get paid. The little girl especially, Isabelle Fuhrman, she did a really great job in her part. For a twelve year old in a horror flick she was good. I think given a proper chance she has a good acting career infront of her, she is a very pretty (destined to be beautiful woman one day) and talented girl. The rest of the cast did a good job to and overall I was quite happy. I was very pleased to see CCH Pounder in it, even if it was just a small part I do enjoy seeing her. Even the youngest girl Aryana was good in her part. Hmmmm this review is turning out to not be as lively as most of mine.

Storyline: Ah yes the achilies heel of most horror films, it was this movie weakest link as well. Not that it was bad, but up till you find out what really the fuck is going on at the end it all feels very much "Been there, done that". Not that the story is bad because its not, its just mediocre for awhile but is redeemed at the end when you finally see the whole picture as it were.

Effects: Well the visual effects were fine, it had some CG effects but never any that I saw done to the point of being over used or being so blatant that it detracted from the movie. The audio in it was pretty nice. Neither one of those really stood out though, they were good and they were good at their job but thats about the extent of it. I do think it could have stood to have a little more I guess moody is the word Im looking for, music. Some scenes could have been set a little better from the audio department. Or in scenes like outside in the treehouse in the snow fallen woods, a little wind or makybe crackling branches softly would have helped bring home the sense of the cold and the forest.

Overall: I was quite pleased with the movie, it wasnt exactly a double barrell shotgun full of handjobs blasting me point blank like Grindhouse was but I was overall happy with this movie. It was definitely a vast improvement over your standard Dark Castle Pictures movie since most of their films they release are just a greasey shit on the front porch of movie goers. Would I buy it on dvd? Nah, but I did enjoy seeing it in a theater and is worth watching once for sure. I know this was a bland and to the point kinda review but I just dont have anything overly good or bad to say, I enjoyed the movie alot and was into it and when it was done I was satisfied in seeing it, but it doesnt have much replay value.

I give it 7 out of 10 stars.
