I post no spoilers in my reviews.
Well after alot of patience I finally got to see Moon. It was out for like 3 days at the god damned AMC theater of all places, but I wanted very much to see this so I swallowed my bad disposistion I hold for them and went to an AMC to see it. This was one of those limited release films so I was fortunate we got it around here at all, it was kind of like how Open Water was only showing in a few places and couple weeks later we got it for very short time around here. This is the only second movie from Duncan Jones and is the first movie of his Ive seen. This is a weird review for me and hard to really put into words what I thought without making this much longer than it should be, so Ill try and just freeze dry it.
Direction: From a directors standpoint this film was very solid, I didnt see anything that I thought could have been done better or anything for the most part really but it lacked any sense of style or unique work on the directors part. It was kind of like a I guess like a stoutly, young Amish wife in terms of direction, yes she is not bad to look at it and works very hard with good child birthing (yeah I cant believe Im using this as an analogy either) hips and will always be there for you but in the end she isnt anything fancy or overly attractive. But perhaps looking back maybe thats exactly what Moon needed, was nothing fancy in terms of direction, it probablly infact benefited from just being a plain jane to help the setting and mood of the movie. I dont have anything good or bad to say here really so lets get the fuck on.
Acting: Well oddly enough the acting much like the directing was solid but nothing thats going to win an award really. Sam Rockwell is a good actor but he seemed to be holding back or unsure in this movie, with that said though there really wasnt a time during the movie he didnt seem not believeable really in his role. I guess he played his part well because again nothing fancy, but he seemed kind of like how a everyday kinda guy would be in his situation. I wont spoil anything but the part Kevin Spacey played was good for him, he had the tone and voice perfect for his character and Ill just leave it at that for risk of giving anything away. Really though 98% of the movie is just those two and no one else.
Storyline: The story is pretty unique for the most part. It borrows just slightly from several other stories and settings but it kind of in the end makes everything its own. But this really is more of a character piece on Sam Bell. Its more of something that leaves alot to the immagination in terms of filling in the blanks, giving you enough to satisfy you for the sake of the movie but also leaves you wondering alot. Really the storyline is very good because it seems like something that could actually happen. Its very subtle in how its told and slow paced, draw out gradually but in the end it doesnt wrap up everything but it leaves you with a sense of conclusion. The outcome and pacing are only for those who truly enjoy science fiction though as the movie is slow going and not action packed, if you enjoyed the silent portions of 2001 space odyssey then you would enjoy this movie.
Effects: My only complaint is with the audio, I really wish they hadnt put in alot of the music they did. I felt it would have been much better off if since it was in space we were left with absolute silence in some parts, giving the film a greater sense of desolation and isolation one would experince and no sounds to comfort you except of machineary. Other than that everything was fine. The visual effects complimented the movie pretty well and at no time did something look overly fake or detract from the movie and pretty much looked how I would expect things to look.
Overall: I say this movie is a very rare movie that actually represents what science fiction is to me, what the original version of the term meant in that it obviously wasnt real and a fantasy tale but at the same time it wasnt that much different than our reality as it is now. The movie overall felt very much like it could be almost real. When I think science fiction I dont think what most movies are that get slapped with that label with monsters, aliens, space ships, explosions and so on, I think of science fiction as a slight perversity of our reality. I very much enjoyed the movie but it left a unique imprint on me thats hard to explain. I dont think I would buy the dvd of it as this is one of those movies that is diminished each time you see it and never as good as the first time.
I give it a 8 out of 10 stars.
