Well this is a reboot for the long running star trek series and is directed by JJ abrahams who up till now only really directed a couple episodes from tv shows and mission impossible 3 so we know what to expect. Any comparrisons I make in this will be directed towards the original series since its what this is modeled after. So after a severly declining movie franchise, the undeniable decreasing quality of all the series can this movie reinvigorate the franchise? Well folks, Im gonna let you know.
Directing: Well I might as well just jump right in and say it was mediocre at best. It was nothing special really and pretty much standard fare for this type of movie. It wasnt horrible but it wasnt great. He tried to spice it up by using spinning shots or inverting the camera slowly during long shots of outerspace but it wasnt enough. From a camera standpoint it was very solid for a film student, it did have a couple interesting angles though but on the whole nothing worth talking about in great detail. Only real complaint is alot of action sequences were shot to close up, Im assuming to try and disguise the poor fighting skills of the actors much like what happened in the majority of fight scenes in batman begins. From the directors standpoint this movie was handled exactly like a big budget, special effects laden, cliche, hollywood action movie.
Acting: Im pretty sure that when they casting for this movie the criteria read something like "If you looking like character X and sound like character X then your hired" because all the characters looked like younger versions of the original cast and at times sounded like them but thats where it ended really. Just because you look and sound like spock doesnt mean you can play the part well or even be good at it. The acting overall was very hammy and over the top. They took what made the original characters unique and ramped those qualities up by 100%, like one scene shows spock talking about time travel and out of the blue with no warning bones yells "Damnit spock Im a doctor not a physicist!" and it really just seemed out of place and forced, the whole movie was like that. Or kirk in the series was a ladies man but he never had to hit on them, he was just the cool guy women wanted but in the movie kirk is making noises and comments at every woman he walks past like some horned up teenager with no self control, and every character was like that, they shoe horned into a forced amount of that characters traits and made them feel fake. Ive seen worse acting but this was just awfull and it was mostly because of how they were written and the fact that actual acting didnt seem to matter as long as you looked and sounded like your character. Oddly enough eric bana was the best actor in here and he cant really act worth a shit.
Storyline: Basically, there was none. Really the story could have been (and probablly was) written late one night at a bar on the back of a cocktail napkin. The story unlike the original series had no thought to it at all and no cerebral satisfaction. You never once had to think about what was going on, it had no theme and was just safe, stupid, cliche, brainless and easily consumned by the viewing masses. It was definitely a no brain required film. Those movies have their places but star trek was always based on these really cool and unique stories that made you consider the overall theme or plot point. None of that was here though, it was purely a excuse for fights and special effects. Im just jaded by this because I always like star trek originally because it had real stories to them, cheesey as some were they were still unique and good. This was a film that appealed to the lowest common demnminator so they dont have to stop and think about something and intterupt their shovling of popcorn in their mouths. It also felt like chunks of it were missing, all the sudden uhura starts kissing allover spock twice for no real reason and Im like "They just met and she is making out with him? What the fuck did I fall alseep and miss something?" the pacing and flow of the story felt really hurried and jumbled like they tried to shove to much into 2 hours. And the little things really made me roll my eyes, like they are in a earth bar and they tried to jam in current real things into the movie like this woman says to the bartender "Ill have a budweiser classic" and I groaned, or kid kirk 3000 years in the future is driving a corvette he stole while listening to the beastie boy on the radio......who the fuck decided shit like this was a good idea? Even kirks motorcycle was just a motorcycle with some led lights slapped on it.
Effects: Well for a movie like this they have be commented on. Its your standard CG fest of computer effects and barely a hint prosthetics. I mean the effects were really well done and not to often looked really fake, although anytime you do alot of CG effects it never really feels real. But really its space, it has ships and explosions. Everything, especially the action scenes were so effects laiden that I could never suspend disbelief long enough to be excited by them. When you overuse CG effects yeah they make look pretty but it removes you from the movie and detracts from you getting into it.
Overall: Really, I enjoyed seeing it once but I wont ever buy the dvd or go out of my way to watch it again. Its to cliched and boring, its purely a hollywoodized brainless action movie and nothing more. Really this movie is like a M&M with everything that makes star trek star trek is the candy coating but once you get past it the rest isnt star trek at all, the movie is thinly veiled in some sound effects, uniforms, title and character profiles of the original star trek. Take those away and its not a trek movie at all. When you see this check your brain at the door and just watch it and youll be ok.
I give it 5 out 10 stars.
